4 Strategies for Dealing with the Demands of High School:

  1. Make time for yourself "me time" to recharge your batteries and do something you enjoy. It's essential not just on weekends but also on weekdays when school demands are high. "Me time" is also an excellent opportunity to reflect upon what has gone well in your life. Making time for yourself is crucial because it helps you de-stress after a long day of schoolwork or exams at university. It also allows you to think about your life outside of high school. Sometimes we can become so caught up in our academics that this becomes all that matters to us.

  2. Learning to say no is another vital skill. If you are trying to cram too much into your schedule, it will be difficult for you to maintain a good quality of life and do well in school. The skill of saying no applies during high school and later on when applying for college or university! Apart from being able to say no also includes being able to ask for help. Asking for help means that you can ask for help when needed, whether guidance from your parents or teachers to time management skills and healthy habits.

  3. It's okay to ask for help. Sometimes it can be scary to be vulnerable and ask for help. However, if it prevents you from doing well in school or feeling unhappy, this might be what you need. It will be essential to know when you need help. It might be asking for help studying, or it could even mean having someone to talk to about managing issues. Mental Health counseling is a great way to deal with stress and anxiety and is sometimes even available.

  4. Developing stress management skills are essential for teenagers to learn because they will likely have a lot on their plate during high school. There are many resources available on the internet that can help them develop these skills. Stress management skills include but are not limited to yoga, meditation, and exercise. It is also important to recognize when you are stressed and when to use specific skills. Signs of stress include, but are not limited to, back pain, difficulty sleeping, and negative thoughts.

It is normal but if it becomes too overwhelming, seek help from an adult that you trust or talk to the guidance counselor at your school.
