Big T trauma
Big T Trauma reacts to a very distressing and life-threatening event or situation. That's why we usually think of extreme events when we think of trauma—for example, a war, a natural disaster, a violent crime, a school shooting, or a severe car accident. In addition, the death of a parent can be a significant trauma. These are the types of trauma that can cause PTSD in adolescents. For trauma to be considered PTSD, symptoms must last more than a month and be severe enough to interfere with daily functioning.
Acute major T-trauma results from a single traumatic incident, whereas chronic T-trauma results from repeated and ongoing trauma such as abuse or domestic violence. Bullying or cyberbullying can also qualify as chronic adolescent trauma, especially when it is severe and persistent.
Big T trauma and PTSD have severe mental, physical and emotional impacts on young people. The effects of trauma can be long-lasting and harm daily functioning, relationships, and long-term mental health. In addition, T-trauma major was associated with a higher risk of suicide.
Little T trauma
However, what counts as trauma is not simply an extreme, life-threatening event. Some types of trauma in childhood or adolescence do not involve violence, death, or catastrophe but can still have a significant negative impact. Any ongoing event or situation that causes stress, anxiety and feelings of helplessness can qualify as minor trauma.
In young adults, minor trauma can result from a breakup, a problematic friendship, the loss of a job, or financial worries. While these incidents do not threaten the safety of young people, they can create anxiety, dissatisfaction, and a sense of inability to control their lives. And those feelings can produce some of the same symptoms as significant T-trauma—though usually not as severe.
In addition, minor and significant T-traumas can cause mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. They can also cause concomitant disorders such as B. Substance abuse, eating disorders, and other behavioral health problems.
